The idea of the manifest presence of God is one promoted in the so called "River" revival. But if you consider the flippant circus atmosphere of the meetings at places like lakeland and others where they have this idea God wants you to have a "party" in his presence it is apparent these people have no idea of the true nature of God.
I came across this sermon by Charles Finney about the manifest presence of God as He revealed himself to Moses.
What I was struck with was how humbled and in awe Moses was in the real presence of God. Additionally I found this description Finney gives of God's glory very revealing;
"It deserves special notice here that the answer given by God to Moses shows in what his glory really consists. Moses says, "I beseech thee, show me thy glory." The Lord answers--yes--"I will make all my goodness pass before thee." The glory of the Lord, then, consists in his goodness. It is not as some seem to suppose some dazzling splendor, some effulgence of light ineffable and overpowering--no such thing as this seems to have been thought of; but Jehovah's goodness--the intrinsic excellencies that compose his character--these he would cause to pass before Moses, for these are his true glory. "

which incidentally is a wonderful website that has all the sermons ever written down that Charles Finney preached available to read.
