Famed evangelist Billy Graham’s letter calling America and its “deceived people” to repentance is one in a series of escalating warnings that the nation is in growing danger of God’s judgment, prominent faith leaders told Charisma News…

“This may be our last chance to call the nation to pray,” says Anne
Gimenez, national chairperson of America for Jesus—America for
Jesus—The Awakening, which expects hundreds of thousands of
people to gather at Independence Mall in Philadelphia Sept. 28-29
to pray and intercede for the United States…

In his letter, “My Heart Aches for America,” the 93-year-old Graham
wrote that he recalled how his late wife, Ruth, once expressed
concerns about the nation’s “terrible downward spiral”—exclaiming,
“If God doesn’t punish America, He’ll have to apologize to Sodom
and Gomorrah.”

Graham, who has preached to more people than any other
Protestant in history—2.2 billion—wrote that he wondered what
Ruth would think of the country today where “self-centered
indulgence, pride and a lack of shame over sin are now emblems
of the American lifestyle.”

“My hearts aches for America,” wrote Graham… “The wonderful
news is that our Lord is a God of mercy, and He responds to
repentance. In Jonah’s Day, Nineveh was the lone world superpower—
wealthy, unconcerned and self-centered. When the Prophet Jonah
finally traveled to Nineveh and proclaimed God’s warning, people
heard and repented. I believe the same thing can happen once
again, this time in our nation.”

Graham’s letter calling America to repentance comes as a growing
number of highly respected Christian leaders have issued similar
warnings in recent months, noting that the nation is in a downward
spiral of economic decline, immorality, corruption, growing secular
humanism and attacks on religious liberty.

Jack Hayford, the founding pastor of The Church on the Way in
Van Nuys, Calif., says Graham’s letter comes as the nation is in
a “very grim hour as we approach the election this year.”

“What we need is something on the order of shock troops at this
hour, and I can imagine that can be raised,” Hayford says. “I don’t
feel despairing. I do feel the urgency. We are at a point that
desperate action is needed…”

Wrote Rick Scarborough, chairman of 40 Days to Save America…
“Today, our nation faces multiple crises—pending economic
collapse, moral disintegration and international terrorism—but all
have spiritual underpinnings… The crises confronting us are
beyond the power of human beings to resolve without divine
guidance. Nothing short of a Third Great Awakening can save us.”

For another Great Awakening to occur, Hayford says the church
and believers must engage in “gut-level, spiritually-impassioned
intercessory prayer”—something lacking in most churches today,
few of which even hold prayer meetings anymore…

Please note that all of the above is written by Charisma Magazine.

  2. Our church has to begun to more seriously pray that which Paul prayed for the church at Ephesus – that the eyes of our hearts would be enlightened, and that we would capture a revelation of the knowledge of Him. This kind of knowledge can only inevitably lead, then, to a great awakening (revival) of the Church Herself.

May the Church of Jesus arise, shine, for our light HAS come; may the light of Jesus’ love, mercy and saving power go forth from the true believes in these last days, drawing many souls to Him before His soon return…..Amen.

  3. Andrew,

Thanks so much for this post today. Billy Graham is one of those leaders who has stayed the course and maintained his integrity. His is a voice of a true prophet. We see this same direction in the nation. I am calling our friends, my FB partners, Twitter, and blogpost to share this article if it is OK. Thanks so much for your faithfulness to serve our King, even against the currents and tides of our day.

i agree with Billy Graham, and what he said also applies to the rest of the world – a few moments ago i was watching the flooding in Manilla. there is disaster everywhere and yet once people get over the initial shock of loss, life returns to what they call normal.
Billy Graham has said it, David Wilkerson has said it and many, many, many, unheard of individuals in the church have been saying it. perhaps Mr Graham has more pulling power than the rest of the church.
the thing is – previous to these days when we’d hear of disaster we were shocked – now it is an everyday occurrence and we are becoming desensitized to it just as we have now become desensitized to sin – what shocked five years ago we now accept as normal. very sad – God’s heart is broken –
but Jesus has said “in the world you will have tribulation but have no fear for I have overcome the world…” we dont understand the meaning of sin, the awfulness of it all in the sight of God – and the sad thing is – many do not want to pray about the deep issues regarding all this – we want God to answer our prayers for healing, wealth and prosperity etc but are we willing to play our part in all of this – not many want to – ostrich christianity!

  6. Thank God that Billy on his last leg has been stirred out of his sleep. I saw an him on Larry King basically agreeing possibly under pressure that there are many roads to God.
Atleast that was what I took away from it. I was bummed out about it. Watching some of those old clips of him preaching Jesus and only Jesus. Thank God maybe the Fire of God has come on him again to wake him up and give him another opportunity to be His voice again. And the Voice is REPENT for the Kingdom of God is Near or in truthful modern terms of the message; Repent or Else, You get to choose!

  7. Although I agree with what Graham is saying, I have lost some respect for him since he said in an interview with Robert Schuller that there is more than one way to God than through Jesus Christ. He needs to repent (change his way of thinking) on that topic.

  8. I beleive that as the judgments increase there will be an awakening, however I dont beleive this nation will ever return to its former Glory.. Yahweh is the only one who can grant TRUE REPENTENCE,,This letter sounds good, but it does not once state what they are calling us to repent from.. Lets pray that it is the kind that Yahweh is seeking for in those who call themselves His children…

  9. If the motive of mens hearts is to go back to our former Glory Here in the US so that we can be comfortable in our sins. It will be a waste of time..

  10. Leslie Flinn Aug 8th 2012

Billy Graham was used by every US president he ministered to for their own carnal purposes and helped them mislead vast numbers of Christians to support their carnal agendas. The US is reaping this heritage. His denomination opposes the work of the Holy Spirit to empower disciples to bring the gospel as Jesus says to: Mark 16:17-18
    New King James Version (NKJV)
17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they[a] will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
In fact his denomination says these things are of the devil.
One measure of insanity is doing the same thing the same way repeatedly and expecting different results. More prayer is not the answer. Repentance is.

  11. Andrew Aug 8th 2012

To the person who said this applies to every nation – you are absolutely right.

    Especially the Western nations.

I am in New Zealand right now. Such a sad state all around the world. We need Revival SO BAD!!

  12. George Luther Aug 8th 2012

    Dear Leslie,

Great points. First, number 1, REPENTANCE of ALL dead works is needed. THEN, fervent prayer is needed for revival.

  13. amen Leslie,, those who fear man, more than they fear Yahweh can never and will never speak a true word… and would definatley not be invited to rub shoulders with the presidents of this nation. PICTURE THE PROPHET JEREMIAH HAVING A SPOT OF TEA WITH THE WICKED KING, AND DISCUSSING THE NEXT WAR…AND HOW HE COULD GET INFLUENCE ALL THE PASTORS TO VOTE FOR HIS PARTY…hahahhaha

  14. Jeff, you must have been typing your response the same time I did…so sorry for the repeat.

  15. I am in agreement that all nations need to repent, however lets keep this real,, It is the United States who Graham wrote this letter too,, In the book of jeremiah chapters 50 and 51 the prophet describes a last days babylon, and the only one who fits that description is AMERICA. also chapter 18 of Revelation which also describes a wicked Nation..which is obviously AMERICA.. we are already under deep Judgment., we would have to begin repenting for yoking ourselves with a beast goverment that sends there soldiers into foriegn nations, many of them, with the name of Christ on there lips, as they slaughter and murder many innocent people.. who dont even want us in there Nations.. If you really want to hear the truth go and interview some foriegners and ask them. We have been behind overthrowing many goverments while them controlled media lies about the reasons..Usually in the middle east is about oil… so many murdered so the rich can make more money.. OUR MONEY IS CANKERED JUST AS JAMES 5 STATES.. there will be an awakening I believe and many souls will come into the kingdom of God in a last harvest, however this nation has had prophetic voice warning it for several hundred years and has yet not truly repented.. i

  16. Val sm Aug 8th 2012

I believe we have been under judgement in different ways since 9/11, but it is gathering speed. IF there is any time to repent, there is very little…..I have a very strong sense of foreboding this past while…..don’t know what it is exactly, but we keep praying for God to have mercy on our land and call people to repentance. I have heard of many dreams of people who are oblivious to the signs of judgment, who continue on their way straight into disaster…..we can only continue praying and walk close to Him. People seem to be living under a “strong delusion”……

  17. Trish Erconner Aug 8th 2012

This ‘prophetic’ comment from Billy Graham is rich coming from a man who teaches that RC’s do not need to repent of all their idolatry and immorality, all are ‘saved’…this is rich coming from a man who pitched his tents just one week after genuine prophets were in places negating what the previous evangelists taught, this is rich coming from a man who compromised the Word of God by associating with the ungodly, even going so low as to be the personal advisors of truly ungodly presidents. Billy, it’s too late now to pretend to be a prophet. It’s now time to repent and confess with your own mouth how you personally led many down the pathways of destruction with your compromises.

  18. Fran Stoll Aug 8th 2012

Golly, I’m glad Jesus “associated with the ungodly” or we’d all be doomed. Just saying.
Gloom and Doom self-proclaimed prophets have tried to call down God’s wrath and judgement on America for decades. God has always blessed (still does) America, and to extract that mantle of blessing from us would make Him like us. . . fickle, schizophrenic, and shallow. No! He is a God of infinite purpose, patience, mercy, and love. He’s done with wrath and judgment – its why He sent His Son, Jesus Christ to suffer all His wrath and judgment. Apologize for Sodom and Gemorrah? NO! Different time, different Covenant.
America will ALWAYS be blessed by God because there are MILLIONS of believers here who love and trust Him to lead us and guide us into paths of righteousness.
We need to be praying and believing for the unbelievers in our nation, that we can truly love them into the Kingdom, not praying for God to show wrath on them that He DIDN’T show on each one of us. Instead, please help us, Lord, to stop being so judgmental, fickle, schizophrenic and shallow.

  19. Andrew Aug 8th 2012

Yes – in his early years, Billy Graham was called the “young prophet” and appeared to be a much more fiery preacher than later.

But perhaps he is rediscovering some of that ‘fire’ in his old age.

    It is never too late.

    Bless you!

It’s always safe to “prophesy” that God wants us to pray more, or study scripture more, or proclaim His word more. Those are timeless truths: but (in Tozer’s famous phase) like shaving with a banana.

Prophecy is sharp, and TIMELY. So is God’s purpose in this time to keep America as “the lone world superpower” ? That seems to be the purpose towards which Graham thinks our prayers should be directed. Should we pray for what is NOT God’s will ?

Or is God’s purpose embodied in the Church ? Does God want to hear our judgemental prayers for the wickedness of secular society (“them”) ? Or is He saying that we who are called by His name should “humble [our]selves and pray and seek [His] face and turn from [our] wicked ways” ?

Does it wound and offend God more that the world follows deceivers who come in the spirit of antiChrist, or that the Church does ?

That the world hates and mistreats aliens, or that the Church applauds when it does ?

That the world abuses the poor, the sick, widows and orphans; or that the Church eagerly assents ?

Let’s pray indeed: that the Church, the Body of Christ, will act and think like Christ, and turn back from following the evil political and social doctrines of deceivers.

Judgement starts in the Church. May WE, the Church, repent.

If this drought isn’t judgment then I don’t know what is. The price of food will soon go up dramatically. This affects the whole world as 2 thirds of the world’s corn supply is grown here.

  24. Camilla Aug 9th 2012

I am really really heart sick over these comments. Do any of us have any right to comment. I for one will not pick up a stone but instead kneel and ask our Father to forgive our attitudes and cleanse our hearts. Maybe the world doesn’t want to know Jesus because we do not know him or fear we will greive him. Please brothers and sisters in Christ, the world and young seekers are
watching let them see Christ in you. Do not plant seeds that we
    do not want to grow.

  26. the sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness has surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings? Isaiah 33.
We in America hardly know what repentance really is. We have totally lost sight of holiness, but instead, a large number think God will overlook their dabbling in internet pornography and such things. Holiness has been so lost that we think about sleeve length instead of not loving the things of the world.
Who among us will be Jesus to the church?

  27. My blessing is departing from America saith YHWH of hosts, because the Kings of this place are rejecting Me and they are in fornication with Gog the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, of the land of Magog. Therefore a terrible disaster is coming upon this place, so depart from here and I shall bring out the obedient remnant from among you. I will cleanse you and your children from your bad habits and sins and you shall know that you are branches grafted into my olive tree, if you shall obey my voice. You heap to yourselves teachers tickling your ears. And you are rejecting My prophets, seeking your own ways and signs, leaning on your own understanding. My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to Me. Seeing thou hast forgotten the law (Torah, instructions) of thy God (YHWH ), I will also forget thy children.
    Hosea 4:5-7

  28. Steve,
I guess your duplicate posting wasn’t intentional, but it really WAS worth saying twice.

And it probably wouldn’t hurt to have this part repeated a third time:

“Does it wound and offend God more that the world follows deceivers who come in the spirit of antiChrist, or that the Church does ?

That the world hates and mistreats aliens, or that the Church applauds when it does ?

That the world abuses the poor, the sick, widows and orphans; or that the Church eagerly assents ?”

  29. I long for the day when we fall on our knees and pray…

We do not debate the “rights and wrongs”, we just fall on our knees and pray…

    The Lord knows our hearts…

He knows the hearts of each and every one of us who is praying…

He is our Very Great Reward…

    Let us pray…

Whether we are understood or whether we are not…

Whether we are persecuted or whether we are not…

Whether we are recognised or whether we are not…

It is the Lord who hears our prayers and our prayers are offered up to His Throne…

    Let us pray…

The Prayer and Fasting for America movement began in 1976 with the musical, “If My People.”. That was 36 years ago and things have gotten worse. So what have we left out? Two things. First, that passage in II Chronicles 7:14 lists three things, not two, that we must do. What we have left out is humility. Sadly, American Christians are not the most humble people around. Second, the teaching in our evangelical churches, even Charismatic and Pentecostal ones, has gotten progressively worse and low-level. In my area of Los Angeles County (the San Fernando Valley-Pasadena area) it is very difficult to even find a church that tells one how to get born again, much less deeper teaching for already true Christians. So, humility and better teaching could turn things around IMO. If you haven’t heard the two minute Paul Washer videotape at Todd Friel’s “Wretched” program, please do. Washer presents the coming persecution of Christians, which has started now.

  32. Ibelieve Aug 9th 2012

I am presently reading the “Harbinger”, and I find it totally out of line to what the Bible presents. The prophet mentioned in the book is totally functioning in some mystical way out view.

The whole book comes across as some kind of sci-fi thriller, that does not line up with end time Bible events.

    Lord Bless,

  33. You have stated some very pertinent points Diane.

Another would be to recognise that II Chronicles 7:14 is a promise addressed to one nation and one nation only, so should not be transferred to another.

Gentile believers do not have a “land” to be healed under that promise.
Our citizenship is not in an earthly kingdom or an earthly land; and our role is not to improve earthly kingdoms.

As ambassadors of Christ our focus is on representing His Kingdom and encouraging people to migrate from the world to the Kingdom of God: no longer separated from Christ without hope and without God, but made fellows citizens in His household with the saints.

  34. Gary,
I considered reading that book after seeing several recommendations, but after reading about it I had strong reservations so didn’t buy the book.

Thank you for confirming that my reservations weren’t misplaced.

  35. Ezekiel Rose Aug 9th 2012
  36. The problem is us…

The problem is not everyone else…

    The problem is us…

The Lord is looking for us to humble ourselves and admit the problems which are within us…

Those of us who are Blood Bought Saints…

If we cannot be honest with the Lord and those of our brothers and sisters in the Lord who He instructs us to be honest with about what remains in us – mostly from the sins of the forefathers – the iniquity which remains in us – patterns of sin which have been practiced and passed down from our forefathers which the Lord tells us He visits on the third and fourth generation – if we can not be honest about these issues none of the strongholds will be broken in our lives…

If none of these strongholds are broken in our lives how will we be salt and light to the world?

We won’t be and if we’re not being salt and light to the world then why do we believe that the world will be a good place to live in?

We are left here to be salt and light if we are not being salt and light what is the point of us being here?

  37. DeWayne Aug 9th 2012

I do not believe God wants ‘America’ to be great, God wants (all of) His people to be great, great in ways and works fulfilling His will and purpsose… this (would) make America great.

America certainly is ‘great’ today, we import perhaps 80% or more of everything we consume (from someplace), as ‘gods Blessings’, and use wars to insure this largees continues
Before Christ sent out the (mature) disciples, after about 3-years of extensive training with Gods wisdom and knowledge, he said wait, “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. (Therefore) be as shrewd/wise as the snake/serpent, and as innocent as the dove.”

This later was beyond ‘renewing your mind’ with Gods wisdom and knowledge, a warning instead to know what Satan and his servants are doing in the world. Verse implies how else will you be ready for an approaching army, if (unprepared) your ten thousand soldiers must defeat the enemy of a hundred thousand.

I do believe only a smallest minority are aware of what Satan and his earthly servants are up to in the world today, nor what they as light and salt in the world are to do. It also appears not to be something easily learned in a prayer closet.

  38. DeWayne Aug 9th 2012

I agree emphatically that prayer is the most powerful of all the abilities we have, also that we show ‘proper’ respect to the king. Christ is King above all kings, inducating need not only to identify the King of kings, but what is ‘proper’ respect for both.

I know a king that religious leaders supported, regardless.

  39. Torments were called down on the U.S. in March of last year. The 8 monthes that followed were filled with more record disasters of number and intensity than ever experienced in its history. If one were to look at a map of federally declared disaster areas in U.S. for 2011 one would clearly see that almost the entire country was covered. Now that torments have been called down on all the earth, I and my partner urge all to walk hand in hand with Our Creator to do His Good Will and to never– ever– let go——-or don’t. We are now just beginning to get warmed up. Tic Toc U.S..

Things really ramped up with 9/11 and the hurricanes that came in following years (Katrina and others) plus the financial crisis and record Tornadoes, etc – through those years.

God has been trying to get America and the world’s attention for a long while now.

It is not getting any better.

    Bless you!

In response to a post above, I would say that if America put to death 57 million+ unborn children and Christians have not yet wept and demanded that this cease, then nothing that we Christians say is going to have the slightest effect at all on anyone.

I am getting concerned that martial law is coming to America and soon Christians will be silenced.

  42. michelle Aug 9th 2012

Lord whatever it takes… Bring salvation… One needs to be saved to be revived… Most in US have never been saved… They’ve been white washed … They just called on the church for some face painting… and the church took the offering… God please… We need whatever it takes … Lord be merciful… Swifty… Deal with this country… One nation under God remove everything else…
    Bring justice and judgment
    that is mercy…
    Send forth salvation…

  43. Why not get all the “leaders of Christianity”in on this .Lets get Rick Warren ,Robert Schuller,Joel Osteen ,Joyce Meyer,Kenneth Copeland,Rod Parsley,Eddie Long,Ted Haggard,Juanita Bynum and all the prosperity gospel preachers along with all the once saved always saved crowd (the you can’t sin your way out of God’s love) preachers like Charles Stanley.Lets get all of these self appointed leaders involved after all they are the ones that got the sheep off in the wrong pastures.
None of these people of renown have repented of their false gospel including Billy Graham so they are not qualified to lead in a repentance prayer. They must first repent themselves.
The motivating force behind this effort is more a spirit of patriotism and the things they are now in fear of losing ,prosperity. They want things to be the way they were.
They say America can repent Nineveh did.Nineveh heard one message and repented.America has heard countless messages and they still say repent of what.
All these so called leaders have led the people astray blind leading the blind.
Billy Graham has been a friend of the world for decades. He has been friends with ever President from Harry S. Truman to Obama and hasn’t led one of them to the Lord.He once told Bill Clinton that after his presidency he should become a preacher.
What we need is nameless people with God’s anointing
Billy Graham doesn’t see the need for water baptism or the baptism in the Holy Spirit. He would hold his crusades and turn new babes in Christ over to Roman Catholics and whatever else group volunteered to do follow up.As someone else said Billy Graham essentially said muslims are going to heaven.
If Billy Graham repented of these things and others there would have been and should have been a public repentance.I pray he does.
Given a little more time say this fall and we will start seeing some genuine repentance. There is coming a rude awakening.
    God Bless

Since we already discussed the “Patriotism” topic at great length in other threads, can we please keep this one close to the actual topic at hand?

The Patriotism subject needs no new arguments started right now, in my view

  45. Michael Aug 9th 2012

It is my understanding that the only thing we can do today is pray! The bible directs us to pray in O.T. & N.T. when any crisis happens or is about to happen in any nation or generation. In prayer is the only place we can win spiritually but which requires sacrifice to make time for. Prayer requires us to humble ourselves and to give up a part of our life to meet God in prayer by faith. It is in prayer that we must listen and do what he wants of each of us as we hear him in prayer. We have to humble ourselves as individuals and as the body of Christ and go to him in honest y and unselfishly in prayer. If we truly humble ourselves and pray he will show each of us what we truly need to repent of and what we need to do as we break before his glory in prayer. It’s easy to throw stones at Billy and point out his errors like if we did not have any, but is this really humbling ourselves and exhorting others to pray? Truth is truth and will always lead us to Jesus and his ways if we listen and follow him in prayer. I have never felt such a resistance to pray and to lead people to pray like I have today. Prayer has been my main weapon of war in my 33 years as a Christian yet it has not gotten easier to pray. It’s hard to know him in spirit and truth without payer because my intellectual knowledge of him will always try to lead me when I do not pay as I should. We must return to God in prayer! His house is a house of prayer.

  46. Ibelieve Aug 9th 2012

Quote…. People seem to be living under a “strong delusion”……UnQuote

I am running into this same situation. I believe people have heard it so much they think that it will get better somehow.

It’s been said that America is so gospel saturated that they have become hardened towards the gospel.

While reading through the NT you will find it mentions in a number of passages that hearing they hear but cannot hear and seeing they see but cannot see.

    Onesimus (Tim)
Someone gave me the book to read and they thought is was great.

The writer pulls a scripture out of context and tries to make it fit America in a prophecy. This prophet in the book keeps running into this guy out of nowhere and translating little harbingers on a scroll type object.

The man is telling this story to a reporter in the book and they keep repeating themselves dozens of times.

I am shocked by the fact that people are acting like this is some type of accurate prophecy when it is no more then making a scripture say something it is not saying.

I think judgement is coming to America, but we do not have to pull a scripture out of context, write a story, just to sell a book.

    Lord Bless,

  47. Let’s keep listening to the same people who have preached the same watered down gospel (or in some cases false gospel) which they have always preached and keep hyping the same “Let’s save America” schtick because things have gotten soooo baaaad. They have been saying this since I was saved 35 yrs ago. I have never not heard this stuff the whole time.

I’m not saying things aren’t bad and I’m not saying things haven’t gotten worse but I am saying this same agenda has been part of the christian landscape the whole time. It isn’t the answer because it doesn’t change anything. It doesn’t work like this. The transformation needs to begin with me, not America.

The American gospel is compromised in so many ways that when it comes to simply living right before God and loving our neighbor we are failures. We have failed to heed the message of Jesus Christ and we think that we can fix it by saying some prayers and bawling a little before God. It’s the effectual fervent prayer of a RIGHTEOUS MAN that avails before God. Most “christians” don’t bother with the technacalities of living righteous because they are convinced they are righteous by just believing. They haven’t been taught they MUST live right to be saved in the end.

If a minority of believers could ever see that the spiritual content of their lives as per Jesus Christ instructons that transform them into salt and light are far and away all that is necessary to preserve a nation then there will be hope for America. Obedience is better than sacrifice. Listen to a prayer of a righteous man.

Gen 18:32 Then he(Abraham) said, “Oh may the Lord not be angry, and I shall speak only this once; suppose ten are found there?” And He said, “I will not destroy it on account of the ten.”

For those who are stumbling over Billy Graham’s mistakes, even feeling justified to condemn him (!), you might want to do a search of Billy Graham’s regrets.

“Bless are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” (Matt. 5)

He presently spends all his free time listening to the audio version of the Bible.

Doug P… is clear that Israel is blinded, according to the scripture. If God had not blinded them, then salvation would not have come to the Gentiles. God’s promises to Israel have not changed..Read Romans 11, read Eph. 2….actually read the prophets….

…and for those who believe that there are so many wonderful Christians in the USA, yes, I believe there are many…..but if the church was what it should be, salt and light, the condition of the nation would never have got so bad.

Val – what an important comment.

  54. DeWayne Aug 10th 2012

I cannot help but agree that America needs change, and the church in America needs repent for many things, vigorously seeking the Lords guidance for His will and purpose.

Surely prayer in this instance is most powerful. These inward needs are best done within the church/body. Yet remembering the purpose of the church, we are predestined and provided all tools needed, we are also sent out into the world… as light and salt.

I don’t want to denigrate anyones prayers, but not much in the world will be accomplished in discipling the world, within the church only.

An old saying is that if you need a job be done, look for the busiest person, these usually are the ones that accomplish such tasks. I am saying we also need become busier… in the world.

  55. DeWayne Aug 10th 2012

Forgive me Andrew for going off subject, but comment makes it necessary.

Perhaps we should call Gods special people of old and today as the ‘covenant people’. The English word Jewish/Jew did not exist before the 18th century.

I believe soon the Christian church will need stand by the people-Israel, these people remaining faithfull to God and Torah. In the past this was not done, perhaps because lacking discernment between a rebel and faithfull….. sorry again… remove this if you wish.

  56. Here is the word of the Lord spoken through true prophets.

    Ezekiel 14:12-13

“The word of the Lord came again to me, saying: “Son of man, when a land sins against Me by persistent unfaithfulness, I will stretch out My hand against it; I will cut off its supply of bread, send famine on it, and cut off man and beast from it.”

    Jeremiah 15:5-8

“For who will have pity on you, O Jerusalem? Or who will bemoan you? Or who will turn aside to ask how you are doing? You have forsaken Me,” says the Lord, “You have gone backward. Therefore I will stretch out My hand against you and destroy you; I am weary of relenting! And I will winnow them with a winnowing fan in the gates of the land; I will bereave them of children; I will destroy My people,
Since they do not return from their ways. Their widows will be increased to Me more than the sand of the seas; I will bring against them, Against the mother of the young men, A plunderer at noonday; I will cause anguish and terror to fall on them suddenly.”

If the Lord God Almighty (who does not change) destroyed His own people who forsook Him and did not repent and turn back to Him, what do you think He’s going to do to the land of America and every other nation who has forsaken Him?

  57. DeWayne Aug 10th 2012

Not everything said is a prophecy, great leaders of the past have said many things, validate their prophecy, use discernment (common sense) in all else.

At the time of Christ’s ministry, the people of the land were the House of Judah (2-tribes). The House of Israel had been conquered and carried off around 721BC, said never to have returned.

It was temporary that the hearts (of the faithful) were (temporarily) hardened, this said for the time of the Gentile to be fulfilled. In the Last days God pours out grace (a study in itself), and the word says that all (faithful) Israel will be saved (another study).

  58. The Billy Graham pattern of ministry is a pattern of success that is measured by the multitudes. The more people that respond to the message the bigger the success. Jesus also had huge “success” early on in His ministry like this. Those results didn’t last though. The “many” will inevitably dwindle down to the “few” if the truth is preached. Christianity tends to neglect that aspect of the gospel process. We herald the great success in numbers and diminish or ignore the weeding out process that discipleship brings.

Jhn 6:60 Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this said, “This is a difficult statement; who can listen to it?”
Jhn 6:66 As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore.

In spite of the scriptural precept that we must pay a price to be a disciple of Christ and cling to Him who has the words of eternal life, it is the initial success of the gospel that has become the standard by which most anything Christian is judged anymore- How big is it? The building, the church roll, the altar call, the prayer line, the budget etc. It’s all about quantity and little to nothing to do with quality. This is the legacy of Billy Graham and the pattern that he set. Ease of acceptance with little accountability. All the benefits of salvation and none of the conditions of discipleship. Easy believism that denies the progress of the gospel, reducing the many to the few. “And after all, I’m an evangelist”. The hard truths just aren’t my message.

It’s a cop out. It’s not the whole counsel of God. This is why so many evangelical churches(and pulpits) are full of sinners and compromisers. False shepherds clinging to numbers instead of shepherding the flock of God in the way of the truth which likely will cost them numbers of people instead of increase the rolls. Sadly, many pastors are deceived in this regard and don’t even realize it.

Evangelical Christendom in America today represents the result of this type of message. It’s philosophy in a nutshell…The more popular you are and the more people there are means the more valid the movement is and the more that God is with us. Numbers are what legitimize us before men and assure us of God’s blessing. Thus the righteous standard of the gospel becomes unwittingly compromised to accommodate more and more people as a sign of its’ success.

This kind of numbers game also translates into the notion that the more people there are praying, the more that God is obliged to comply with our requests.

What I see in the Bible is something different than seeking to enlist the masses in an effort to move God behalf of our nation.

The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.James 5:16.

This is the pattern. Just one righteous man!!! Righteous, godly and holy men who stand in a unique place of the few, pleading for the many before God.

Abraham pleading for Sodom and Lot, Moses the mediator pleading for God to spare Israel repeatedly, Joseph alone being sent ahead to save the many, Samuel interceding for Israel and grieving over Saul, David the man after God’s heart shepherding God’s people, Elijah who stood before God and unknowingly in concert with 7000 others, Elisha, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel. Daniel is preeminent in his righteousness and devotion to God’s purposes through prayer.

The New Testament brings in Elizabeth and Zechariah. They were both righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord. Simeon, this man was righteous and devout. Anna, she never left the temple, serving night and day with fastings and prayers.

These are the people who helped prepare the way for God’s next move. Then there was John. The voice of one… there had arisen no one greater to prepare the way of the Lord.

There is Peter casting his net on Jew and Gentile. And the glorious gospel of the blessed God committed to the trust of one man…Paul’s constant claim… My gospel, My gospel.

This was Paul’s message and hope, the gospel. The gospel preached in truth and power will make us righteous men, holy men, godly men. Men of faith who can stand, who can endure, who can overcome. Men who can be heard on high. These are those who move the hand of God.

“I searched for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land, so that I would not destroy it; but I found no one. Ezekiel 22:30.

We must Build the Wall AND stand in the gap!!! To build the wall is to bring in separation. Sanctification, a separation of light from darkness, good from evil, right from wrong. In Ezekiel’s day the Law was the wall of division establishing the divide between righteousness and unrighteousness. Righteousness had to be established and built up as a basis for God to hear and respond to men. “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me” Ps 66:18.

In our day the gospel is that wall, except it is broken down and ineffective for the most part. We must build up the gospel as a means to righteous living and true holiness, the gospel that saves us from our sins and transforms us into salt and light. The true gospel means freedom from sin and the power to live right. The gospel is not some sort of way for God to excuse me in spite of my sin. We must discard the saved-in-sin, false grace gospel that allows me to live worldly, sinful when in reality I am hell bound, deceived into thinking that God sees me as righteous when I am not.

My contention is that our problem is not that we need more prayer but that we need more righteous men who pray and that a true gospel will produce that people. At the root it is a gospel issue and not just a prayer issue.

“The kingdom of God is not going to advance by our churches becoming
filled with men, but by men in our churches becoming filled with God.”

    Good comment.

I myself have reservations on what took place with Billy Graham. Seeing and hearing of thousands of people who came forward at his crusades.

The reason I feel this way is because I personally helped in a Franklin Graham crusade. Months before the event men showed up on Saturdays to be trained to work in a crusade for promise keepers.

We were showed how to deal with men who would come forward to receive Jesus. We were told to set all through the audience and when others saw us going forward then they would go down to the platform area as well.

The groups were small but we were told we needed to be there for the so called training. The day Franklin was to speak at the meeting they made the announcement that any men who wanted to help had to sign up and have a brief training time.

When the altar call was finally given, thousands of men went down to the platform area. When I got down there a lot of men were in groups talking, but to be honest I only seen “one” man who was there for salvation, as he was weeping and very repentant.

The rest of the men went through the motions of going through the sinners prayer to give the appearance that something was happening.

Afterwards I wondered if this is what took place at the Billy Graham crusades as his son was using the same pattern.

Sure one sinner repented and the angels rejoiced, but the allusion to the crowd was that many were coming to Christ.

Billy Graham who professes to be a democrat ran around with a lot of professional sinners and presidents, but it was a whose who crowd.

To be honest I think the man was a great orator but I do not see the Bible pattern in his ministry.

When Peter ministered to the 5000 men not including women and children they cried out what must we do to be saved. He did not later socialize with the Herods of his day.

As Christians do we put men on a platform and measure their success by numbers?

Your definitely right I think it was all a show about the numbers.

    Lord Bless,

In the early days it was a lot more than just “show”.

    Bless you!

  61. Foolhardy Fred Aug 12th 2012

I have heard that Billy Graham “agrees with the Pope on most things” and that he has said in a TV interview with Robert Schuller that people do not need to hear the Gospel or even hear the name of Jesus Christ to be saved.

What tragedy this is for the Gospel of Jesus CHRIST should these very disturbing “news items” prove to be true.

  62. Foolhardy Fred Aug 12th 2012

Equally as tragic is the practice of Billy Graham Ministries to deny Roman Catholics the opportunity to respond to the Gospel at his crusades but rather to send them back to their parish priest effectively condemning them to another round of indoctrination into false religion.

The article at this file path provides information for any who may be uninformed or misinformed about the issues I am raising here.

  63. ValleyAnt Aug 13th 2012

I’m not yet in the place where I can speak with clarity on most things. However, I do believe that many times today, the enemy is behind even Christian works, because so many Christians are sleeping. When the Lord, through His People, isn’t leading, the enemy will be. We need true repentance in America, but it seems only the Lord (and maybe a few who aren’t to tell anyone) know when it will come. America is not a hard case for the Lord (not at all), but American Christians certainly are. I sometimes talk to the Lord about the general American Christian. Rather, I complain and sigh. I try my best to look like the average sinner, but I don’t fool Christians whose backs are turned to the Lord, who are ablaze with rebellion, unfaithfulness, and self-love (raw selfishness).

I look forward to the day when I will no longer be amazed or dumbfounded by the unfaithfulness, rebellion, and hatred for God that I see in so many Christians. This is a state of emergency, and it seems that the best thing we all know to do is pray. Meanwhile, if Christians look to men like Billy Graham to tell them what to do and when to repent, one can almost be certain (in our times when the god of this world holds such great sway over the world and many Christians also) that the Lord is not the One behind whatever it is. From some experience, I know that purity of heart and genuine goodness do not necessarily in the Lord (1Cor. 13). “Wisdom is the principle thing, therefore, get wisdom” (Pro. 4:7). Wisdom is to do what the Lord says because the Lord says it, not to wait till people get involved before hitching a ride. Repentance is the Lord’s will not the will of Billy Graham.
